Just because we’re bordered by mountains, rather than oceans, doesn’t mean we can’t channel Kate Hudson’s stylish blend of surfer girl meets hippie chic.
“Everything (in the store) is sexy but simple,” says Wendy MacLean, owner of Surf Couture, 2565 W. Main St. in downtown Littleton.
The boutique, open since last November, carries all Los Angeles-based lines focusing on denim, casual dresses and tops, swimsuits and yoga wear, as well as men’s clothes. Prices range from $30 to $400, with frequent sales. Soft T-shirts with unique detailing were in a $10 bin during a recent visit.

SHORT ORDER LOOK: "You think this is a sweet skirt with a pretty bird print, but when you put it on it is all legs," MacLean says. Modern Amusement skirt ($148), Vicarious By Nature twist-back tank ($50) and JVL Los Angeles crossover hoodie ($90). All at Surf Couture.
A Santa Cruz, Calif., native, MacLean has lived in Denver since 1993, but she hasn’t forgotten her West Coast roots.
“You won’t find things here that are super form-fitting, but these clothes aren’t frumpy,” she says. ”The vibe is simple, it’s sassy, it’s sexy. I’m never over-the-top. You can change these looks from day to night. Denver is similar to L.A, in that it’s casual. But casual doesn’t have to mean sloppy.”
For summer, MacLean says a must-have look is a silky feminine dress that can be belted. The one displayed in her store window “gets tons of compliments from both men and women,” she says. “And I’m seeing the full skirt mini everywhere. Yes, it’s short, but the shape is a little more forgiving.”

JUST SAY OHM: Stay in shape to show off summer's short styles with a little stretching -- in cute clothes, of course. LA Made tanktop ($12). At Surf Couture.
