Personal Shopper: Easy fashions for day or night
By Lesley Kennedy
Ever wish you could just wave a magic wand and the perfect outfit would appear in front of you? Consider us your fashion fairy godmother. In our Personal Shopper feature, we take the guesswork out of shopping by visiting stores we love to showcase great looks for you to steal.
This week is all about Denver designers. We visited Mona Lucero, a boutique carrying clothing and accessories by Lucero and others, along with a great selection of gifts, and The Fabric Lab, a store that carries clothes, accessories and gift items all made by local designers and artists. We asked each store to put together a cute look for day and evening.
Mona Lucero, 2544 15th St.
Day look: Mona Lucero cotton, lined dress ($150), J Lo sunglasses ($26) and vintage hat.
“The dress is a combination of Little House on the Prairie meets French maid,” Lucero says. Look for a big variety of J Lo shades at the store — priced at an affordable $26.
Evening look: Mona Lucero hand-painted vintage layered slip dress ($260), ivory satin brocade bag ($28) and black sheer mesh scarves ($18).
Lucero, who has a degree in art, combines art with fashion design in this dress. “It’s called First Day of First Grade,” she says. “As far as finding something to wear at night, you can’t go wrong with a vintage slip. It’s comfortable and you can’t wear anything sexier.”
The Fabric Lab, 3105 E. Colfax Ave.
Day look: Pearl blue silk top ($42) and skirt ($42) and Giddyup! one-of-a-kind messenger bag made from vintage upholstery and second-hand material ($98).
“I like the idea of the bright colors and I feel that it’s put together, but not stuffy,” says Fabric Lab’s Melissa May. “I like the youthfulness of it.”
Evening look: Sarah H. Chung feather necklace ($30), Let ‘em Have It by Fallene Wells velvet jacket ($60), Kimono Dragons dress ($70) and Thriftonista purse ($12).
“I wanted to build this outfit around this fantastic necklace,” May says.
