NEW YORK — We thought we were taking a break from high-end designer styles when we checked out the Gottex swimwear collection for spring 2010, but just because the material was skimpy doesn’t mean it was lacking in artistry.
A “fusion of technology and luxury,” these statement suits used fabrics like laminated tulle, plasticized Lycra and laser-cut jewel-like embellishments to bring high fashion to water wear.
Save a stray wedgie here and one bottom style that looked a little sumo-wrestler-diaper to me, these were styles you’d expect really rich, really fit, really lean ladies to lounge in poolside while sipping fancy drinks with umbrellas and fruit kabobs. They’d stretch out on their chaise lounges wearing enormous sunglasses and flipping through Vogue and Vanity Fair. Then, when they finally decide it’s time to rise, they’d casually toss on one of Gottex’s lust-worthy selection of printed silk kimonos, lame degrade caftans and pleated shawls.
So long, sarongs! There’s a new breed of cover-up in town. Start booking that resort getaway now.
