NY Fashion Week spring 2010 top trends
By Lesley Kennedy
It feels a bit strange to be thinking about the spring 2010 New York Fashion Week collections, held Sept. 10-17, seeing as fall weather is just now hitting us. But that’s how the fashion world works, folks.
We were in the Big Apple to get the low-down on what will be hot after the thaw next year. And while you’re just now pulling out your boots, sweaters and gloves, it’s never too early to be thinking about next season. Here are five trends to warm up to come spring.

1. Show some skin: Slashes, sheer materials and cutouts were all over the runways. Michael Kors, Jill Stuart, Chado Ralph Rucci, Marchesa, Marc Jacobs, Rodarte, Donna Karan, Custo Barcelona and Ralph Lauren all went sheer, slashed or cut-out.

2. Get your shine on: You’d be hard-pressed to find a designer who wasn’t dazzled by sequins or metallics for spring. Derek Lam, DKNY, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Michael Kors, Jill Stuart, Rebecca Taylor, Zac Posen were just a few who went for the glow.

3. Paint the town in prints: Interesting dye techniques gave garments the illusion of being painted with watercolors. Carolina Herrera, Carlos Miele, DKNY, Reem Acra, Lela Rose, Vivienne Tam, Nicole Miller and Cynthia Rowley all went a little Bob Ross.

4. Color me red: It came in many shades – from orangey to deep burgundy – but most collections featured something crimson. Oscar de la Renta, Tory Burch, Derek Lam, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Narciso Rodriguez know how to rock the red.

5. Feather your nest: Recession? Fashion laughs in your face and goes ultra-glam for spring with feathered jackets, dresses and skirts. Jason Wu, Diane von Furstenberg, Rodarte, Chado Ralph Rucci and Zac Posen went light and fluffy for spring.
