Buy this book – ‘Who What Wear’

Do you love clothes, but dread shopping? Maybe you want to revamp your wardrobe, but you’re not sure which pieces to ditch and which ones to purchase? Or do you just have a passion for fashion?

Whatever your reasoning, you should pick up a copy of the new style guide Who What Wear: Celebrity and Runway Style for Real Life (Abrams Image, $18.95). Brought to you by Katherine Power and Hillary Kerr, the team behind the popular Web site WhoWhatWear.com, the former Elle editors have pulled together a great resource for all sorts of occasions.

Learn how to reinterpret runway looks for reality, take a classic style and make it trendy and which beauty products to skimp and splurge on. My favorite chapter is titled “What to Wear Where.” The writers have come up with 20 different scenarios — from a casual date to a music festival to a black tie wedding to a football game – and they offer really cool looks for each. Definitely ideas to copy soon.

Their advice on outerwear:“Sometimes a classic blazer isn’t enough, and the season calls for a specific piece of outerwear with a certain fashion-forward cut. So, whether it’s a shrunken tux jacket or an over-sized grandpa cardigan, pick the season’s best outerwear option and splurge on it! The same idea holds true for leather jackets: it’s never a bad idea to grab this classic piece in a current style — perhaps a zippered motorcycle or a skinny bomber?”

On accessories and extras:“No matter what happens on the runways, designers always send out some new variation on high-heeled boots and pumps, not to mention the hottest new handbags. You don’t need to buy all three, certainly, nor do we recommend getting the most intense styles available. Again, who wants to shell out their savings, only to end up with something super-dated in a month? But if it’s something you could imagine wearing numerous times throughout the season or it’s a piece you would pass on to your daughter or granddaughter, we say splurge!”
