Little Man Ice Cream’s Flavors of the Week – banana & shopping the sales

Each week, we spotlight a favorite ice cream and a super-sweet deal. This week (Oct. 11 – Oct. 18):

Pumpkins at Little Man Ice Cream

The ice cream: Tired of plain old shakes and malts? Try sprucing them up with a banana! Add one to any flavored shake or malt of your choice.

Why is homemade ice cream so much more expensive? If the flavor and texture doesn’t sell you, maybe the fact that when you get store-bought ice cream you’re paying for 50 percent air! Commercial ice cream machines vary on how much air they “whip” into the product, called overrun. Our machine puts anywhere from 10-20 percent overrun into the final product, where corporate companies put in 100 percent overrun. So, the next time you’re paying 1/2 of what you would for Little Man Ice Cream at the store, you’ll know why!

The bargain:An upcoming hot-weather destination wedding/family reunion/event had us making a few trips to the mall this week. And, while shopping definitely seemed slow, there were many bargains to be found. My husband scored shorts at Banana Republic for $13 (normally $50). We got the girls J. Crew Crewcuts dresses marked down $10 to $30, and I snapped up J. Crew metallic Mary Janes for $80 (down from $228!). And, if you need a cute summery dress  (just pair with tights and a cardi for fall), Anthropologie has great sale prices, too (around $60-$70 for dresses that were at least twice that). OK, no more shopping ’til Xmas!
