Boot camp, week 13 – Halloween makes for a scary diet
Baby weight is so last season. Follow me as I try to get in shape and shed a few pounds following Denver trainer Anne Parker’s TRX Mini Boot Camp.

It’s been three months, and I can’t imagine life without boot camp. Really? Did I just write that? Well, it’s true. I’ve really come to appreciate and even look forward to working out.
When stress and work and laundry and groceries and kids and cleaning and all the other parts of life build up, I know I’ve got at least two or three hours of me-time built into my week. Having a scheduled class is completely different from thinking, “oh, I’ll figure out some time today to get my workout in.” That kind of thinking is easy to blow off.
Anne’s workout was crazy tough Monday. We did circuit training with so many squats, lunges and jumps that I don’t think anyone in the gym wasn’t feeling the burn. At the end of the workout, she asked runners to come to the center of the gym, and non-runners to stay to the side. For some reason, I decided I was a runner that day. Silly me. The folks who stayed on the side did core exercises — not that they were easy, being planks and all. But us “runners?” Well, we did five minutes worth of sprints. SPRINTS.
I hadn’t sprinted since high school track. Let’s just say the old wheels aren’t quite as well oiled as they used to be.
Wednesday was the big snow, so no class, but Anne sent us an at-home workout that was far from slacker-ville. It was supposed to take about 30 minutes, but it took me an hour. Of course, the kids coming in to join me every 10 minutes didn’t help matters.
I counted shoveling on Thursday as my workout, and somehow managed to squeeze in a workout Friday, even though I had a photo shoot in the morning and promised to take the kids to Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs in the afternoon. (Highly recommended, by the way.)
Saturday, I went to an early morning boot camp, which turns out was very smart, because I think I ate 10 pieces of Halloween candy that night.
Needless to say, Halloween week isn’t the easiest time to watch what you eat. I had two Pumpkin Spice non-fat lattes from Starbucks. No whip. And only size tall. They’re soooo good, tho. And we ate pizza while carving pumpkins, and I probably drank too much wine.
So, now it’s back to the grind. Salads instead of Starbucks. Carrots instead of Candy. Pushups instead of pizza. Halloween week: It was fun while it lasted!
