Golden Globes fashion hits, misses and Mariah Carey

Oh, how we love a red carpet. The glitz and glamour. The dresses and jewels. Tuxedos and shoes. Fancy hair and pretty purses.

Of course, we’re always hoping for some truly tragic ensembles, too, but thanks to Hollywood’s recent romance with stylists, most actresses and actors were looking just lovely at tonight’s Golden Globes. The theme for the night seemed to be fitted mermaid styles — preferably in purple or black — with ruffles or poufs or flounces of material and hair in a messy, side bun/updo.

Sandra Bullock, Jane Krakowski, Fergie, Leona Lewis and Ginnifer Goodwin all went purple, while January Jones, Courteney Cox Arquette, Heather Graham, Glenn Close, Amy Adams, Meryl Streep, Vera Farmiga, Cher, Kate Winslet, Marion Cotillard and Penelope Cruz all went black.

Who made our fave list? Glee’s Lea Michele was adorable in a black strapless Oscar de la Renta cocktail number. We were instantly jealous of Emily Blunt, in her pale pink mermaid gown and Toni Collette in a drop-dead gorgeous gold beaded gown. Oh, and Julianna Marguelies in Narciso Rodriquez? Swoon.

Also loving: Anna Paquin’s gold gown glittered and just made us happy. We miss you Sookie Stackhouse! And we don’t care what anyone says about Betty Draper. We love her! January Jones looked gorgeous in fitted black. We liked the ribbon headband, too.

Um, not so much… Chloe Sevigny loves to take a risk, but her ruffles that ran across the top and down the sides of her dress looked odd. Diane Kruger’s pink frock looked like it belongs at a senior prom.

Up in the air: Fittingly, we were undecided on Anna Kendrick’s Marchesa super flouncy dress. We’re also not sure what the deal was with Tina Fey’s hoop skirt. Patricia Arquette’s dress looked a bit odd, too, but was it bad? Not sure.

Holy boobage: Mariah Carey, we bow down to you. Girl, with curves like that, how could you not wear a dress like that? And Christina Hendricks? Va-va-va-voom! Plus, we love that she wore Christian Siriano.

Rah for red: We love red dresses on the red carpet, so thank you Amy Poehler and Cameron Diaz. You brightened up a rainy day.

Shave, man!: Don Draper, you disappointed us. Jon Hamm went for the scruffy look. Why? “Because I’m utterly lazy,” he tells Ryan Seacrest. “I haven’t worked in about a month and a half so I just quit shaving.” Don would never be so careless!

Scary skinny: Can someone tell us when Jennifer Garner got so skeletal? Seriously, we liked the Versace gown, but her face was so gaunt, we’re worried.
