Red Carpet rundown: SAG Awards

There’s something we love — fashion wise, anyway — about the annual Screen Actors Guild Awards. Things are still glam and fabulous, but they don’t seem quite as stuffy as the Oscars, or even the Golden Globes.

It’s not like we’re talking MTV VMA’s here, but — at least at Saturday night’s ceremony — our favorite actors and actresses seemed to take a little more risk when it came to the style of their gowns and tuxedos.

And, like all good risks — some paid off and some fell flat.

We loved Tina Fey’s purple knee-length Ferragamo dress, with the plunging décolleté. “Glee” cutie Mark Salling looked young and hip in his silver Hugo Boss tux. Marion Cotillard totally pulled off a white Elie Saab Couture beaded and feathery mini dress and white platforms. Diane Kruger redeemed herself from the Globes in a stunning mustardy Jason Wu. We appreciated the ruffled denim tux shirt worn by Justin Timberlake — his Dolce & Gabbana tux wasn’t bad, either. Anna Paquin — our favorite vampire lover — rocked her Alexander McQueen reptile print mini dress. And Michelle Monaghan, in one of the most unique dresses of the night — gets a thumbs up for us for pulling off her silvery gray a-symmetrical gown.

On the losing end? Julie Bowen’s black and white nightmare — the one long black sleeve made her look like she was wearing some sort of mime costume under her white dress. Patricia Arquette had a sort of alien vibe working with her green sequin gown. Meryl Streep’s busy Balenciaga print was not working for us. Drew Barrymore’s Monique Lhuillier tiered blue number just looked off.  Joan Allen’s bizarre fringe necklace made us nervous. What was going on with Sophia Loren? The cutout “sleeves” were just plain weird. And, yes, we are Glamberts at Denveralamode, but that hair was just way too high tonight.

Not risky, but quite lovely were: Mariska Hargitay in magenta Vera Wang; Lea Michele in green Catherine Malandrino; Kyra Sedgwick in ivory Vera Wang; Vera Farmiga in a pale number by J. Mendel; Christina Applegate in pale blue Roberto Cavalli; Kate Hudson in way glam white Emilio Pucci; Anna Kendrick in purple Alberta Ferretti and Penelope Cruz in a knee-length black dress by L’Wren Scott.
